Float glass is a popular and fundamental type of glass, produced by melting raw materials such as soda, lime, silica, alumina, and small amounts of glass clarifiers. Float glass sheets are obtained by pouring a layer of molten glass onto the surface of molten tin. This results in sheets with uniform thickness and a very flat surface.

A general-purpose and easily available glass.
Due to its relatively high thermal expansion coefficient, it has low resistance to sudden temperature changes.

Float glass is also referred to as “ordinary glass.”

It is smooth, transparent, and has a slightly greenish tint visible on the edges. This color is due to iron oxides present in the glass. The thicker the glass sheet, the more pronounced the green tint in the cross-section.

Float glass has many applications.

By thermally treating float glass sheets, tempered safety glass (ESG) is obtained.

By laminating two float glass sheets with a special film, laminated safety glass (VSG) is created.
Float glass is also used in the production of other types of glass, such as tinted glass and patterned glass.
