Quartz glass is characterized by an extremely low coefficient of expansion 5.5 x 10-7 mm. It is at the level of 1/34 of the coefficient for copper and only 1/7 for borosilicate glass. It also shows high heat resistance for shocks, e.g. the glass may be heated to more than 1500 degrees Celsius and then submerged in water without cracking.

The glass transmits UV radiation, and its infrared transmittance ranges to circa 4 micrometers.
